Editor's Note: Contributing Editor, Bill Zettler, has written one of the most in-depth and provocative looks at the social and scientific phenomenon surrounding the issue of global warming. Zettler begins the series with an overview of what has become perhaps the most controversial issue of our time. It is a must read for those who want to have the facts about climate change and the motivations behind those who promote speculation over GLOBAL WARMING. -- Dan Zanoza
If you could wave a magic wand and make all cars in the U.S. increase their average fuel economy by 40% from 25 to 35 miles per gallon, as the Democrats insist is necessary to save the planet, how much carbon dioxide would you prevent from entering the atmosphere? The answer will probably surprise you: less than one tenth of one percent – less than one 1000th (see “Calculation below). It doesn't seem like that very small reduction in CO2 would save any glaciers does it?
Now that you know the answer, ask yourself why the fact that 99.98% of all CO2 emissions do not come from American cars and trucks has been kept from you. What exactly are Al Gore, Senate Democrats and the United Nations trying to hide?
As anyone who can read or hear knows, global warming is the issue of our times. It seems impossible to turn on the TV or read anything in the media without some dire forecast of disaster coming in the near future because of human (anthropomorphic) causes. This is usually simplified as carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuels (mainly natural gas, oil and coal). In this 5 part series, I will examine the sources and arguments of the great global warming debate. Due to the nature of the media coverage, I choose to call it “Global Swarming” because the media, entertainment industry and political elite are moving together in a manner reminiscent of the biblical plague (swarming) of locusts. Together as one, destroying all in its path, locusts and global warming advocates are equally dangerous and equally mindless.
In Part 2 “Global Warming – If It's Not Carbon Dioxide, What is it?” I will discuss the science behind the “CO2 warming” and whether future climate conditions can really be predicted with any accuracy. What is the basis for the climate warming theory (it is a theory, not a fact) that CO2 is causing global warming? Is it really warmer now than in the past? Is carbon dioxide really a pollutant? What if we cut back on driving, would that really help? What are the sources of CO2 besides cars, power plants and factories?
In Part 3 “Global Warming – The Facts Ma'am, Just the Facts” I will discuss the problems with measurement i.e., how do we know what we supposedly know – where and how were those facts accumulated? Is the data being used to predict future warming trends really accurate and, if not, how precise can these predictions of doom be? How was CO2 measured in the past? From a historical viewpoint, are current CO2 levels high or low?
In Part 4 “Global Warming – Conscientious Objectors” I list the objections and the scientists who disagree with the so-called consensus. Are Greenland and Antarctica melting? Is it warmer everywhere? If not, why not? Isn't the sun an important source of warming and cooling? What do clouds have to do with it? Why is it “objectors” are not an “objective” of the media?
In Part 5 “Global Warming – The Lemmings Are Leading Us Over the Cliff (Who Are Those Guys?)” we talk about the people “swarming” to the warming cause and why they are doing it. Should we believe the United Nations? Is Al Gore telling us the truth? Why does the media love the issue and why are they not believable? What happens if they are wrong? What is the real agenda behind “Global swarming”?
Calculation (percentages from EPA):
World fossil fuel emissions = 3% of all CO2 emissions.
U.S. percent of world's total = 22%
Cars percentage of U.S. total = 31%
Mileage improvement 25MPG to 35MPG = 40% of car total
So .03 X .22 X .31 X .40 = 1/10th of 1 percent or 1/1000th
